‘F&F’ Puglia Illustration…

This is a commission or for better words an ‘illustration’ I did quite a while ago…

Something that I have been meaning to write a post about and put up some photos of – especially the process – given as it was more a drawing/illustration piece – a bit different to my usual commissions – of figures or people. The background/ or architecture was to take a back seat…

Having not drawn figures for a while for commission purposes, if more recently only to doodle (badly) in the backstreets of Lisbon, invariably at a table holding a glass of wine, I was a little apprehensive to get it spot on however keeping true to my style… it’s pretty obvious when a piece of artwork bears absolutely no resemblance to the figures it is depicting!

Take a look, and Veronica – I hope/ know they liked it… I look forward to seeing it hung up in real in November and to meeting F&F in person… um beijinho enorme para ti, a minha amiga!!

The Pelican Cafe, London

pelican finished 2

This latest piece of work of mine – finished/framed and delivered last week, was for a newish cafe – The Pelican in Battersea, London. I had sat down with the owner and manager and asked him what he would like, he kept it quite simple, he said: ‘make something that incorporates our motif/branding – the pelican, but other than that do what you like!’ So I decided to make the punters pelicans, and to have my birds either stopping by for a needed caffeine fix (it is great coffee, i’ve sampled it…), picking up a delicious breakfast takeaway, about to go in and settle down to a morning brunch… or sipping on a much needed cocktail!

I have many illustrations of animals in my visual journals and am quite used to drawing many different animals in sketch form, however painting them into a piece cohesively whilst still maintaining the same energy and flow to the painting, proved a new challenge… I think I had a good go at it, and feel it is one of my better colour palettes to date…

Should you be in the area, pop in to the Pelican for coffee, or breakfast or cocktails or to set up an event, it’s a stylish, simple and a very well priced space, well worth a visit especially on a Sunday morning hungover spell…

Othello!

So I did this private commission before christmas, not my main line of work, but something that is fun and requires some concentration – catching an animal’s/person’s personality is easier said than done… it was in fact a christmas present to a very cool little man I know! I hope you like it Alfie! 😉 here are some photos below for you to see how he came about!

Rua Sao Vicente, Mina Gerais, Brazil

In a recent flurry of work/ private commissions (isn’t it always the way…) I was asked to create this home in Minas Gerais, a particularly poignant home for my client as it was where she grew up. I know the client personally, and knew the sentimental importance of the piece, so despite it being a simple building and a smaller piece, it took some time and thought. I thoroughly enjoyed giving the building it’s character, through my usual use of colour if in somewhat random way!

I was also asked to portray her parents in the piece from photos she supplied me with, which again gave it it’s personal touch – and proved trickier than said, given as resemblance is key on such small figures they required less mad dash brush stroke and  a steadier hand!

Take a look, I believe the client was very pleased ;)!

Milan, London, New York and Marina Del Ray CA, USA…

I was very pleased to be approached by my Italian client again this time a special commission for his girlfriend, let’s hope she likes it! It was a montage of many places which was fun to piece fluidly together, also the first client commission in my new space – the light was good and I think I captured it well. Think Milan, New York, London and Marina Del Rey, California… all in one…

It’s been a while since I posted any of the ‘face a day/ week’ sketches I have been doing… but thought I’d post this of my cousin, as she so very kindly put me up in Manchester/ let me tag along to her birthday celebrations and shared her friends with me at the Gig I went to… Very kind, (can’t say she had much choice in the matter… but hey what are family for if only to get free stuff :P).

Many thanks again… It’t just such a shame you had to duck out so early on in the evening? hmmm peaked a little early did we Hatbat?X

Balmoral Beach, Australia

My latest client asked me to work from a photograph of a beach- Balmoral Beach in Australia to be precise. (Given my holiday blues at the time this was really nice to do!) It was a birthday present for the Granny of my client, who turns 90 very soon I believe. The flags, not part of the photo, but through artistic license were added as he requested, in order to combine the family nationalities. I hope you like it James, but more importantly I hope Granny does!

Have a lovely trip!

The Decorative Fair Autumn 2014

So, I came back from holiday, and decided to paint these two babies… figured I would be fresh to really make them pop?

One is created from a photograph I took of the Latin Quarter in Paris, which I visited when I went on an adventure backpacking alone around europe when I was 18, I rediscovered it on my hard drive and thought it was a lovely composition. Think parisian students, wine, bars oh … and rain!

The other is a view I used to walk past all the time when I lived just of the Fulham road, (as an aside my friend’s family run Chelsea Wild, so if you like/ need/ want flowers then go there).

They are currently being exhibited by the Catherine Miller Gallery (located on Hollywood Road, Chelsea, London) at the Decorative Fair in Battersea Park, London. If you are in the area it is well worth a look as it exhibits not only art but furniture and textiles.
